Social Networking...

Wikipedia describes a social network as a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, ideas, financial exchange, friendship, sexual relationships, kinship, dislike, conflict or trade.

Before technology a social network was a gathering of individuals over drinks, dinner, meetings, discussion groups and so forth. However, with the advent of sites like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, today's society has enhanced our networking skills to a digital forum. But what has it done to the individual?

Some would argue that we're more in touch with each other while others argue that it has created a social void in humanity. I would like to think that we have started an ongoing discussion with millions of people. That's the basis behind this social experiment...to get people talking. We might not right letters or send emails or text as mush anymore, but we sure are chatting, rather "tweeting" to be precise. When did this all begin?

Technically, I would have to say AOL was the first to design the digital social network, with its AOL Homepages, chat-rooms and so forth. Though, AOL has since dropped the ball and new sites popped up in the interim. Sites like BlackPlanet.com and Migente.com served as portal for hooking up - though its true purpose was to publish yourself. But social networking as we know of it today, really didn't flourish until the creation of MySpace.com (I think we've all read that success story). MySpace isn't as relevant today as it was last year, but it's still holds a presence in the digital world. Today the buzz it all about Facebook and Twitter. However, with the advent of changes to the Facebook interface, more and more people are flocking to Twitter.com to tweet their hearts out.

Twitter's micro-blogging feature allows for quick, easy, mindless banter. Creating a much needed relief to many of life's overwhelming pressures. Many start off with signing up and realize it's not what their use to, they don't understand its purpose and never sign back in, while others gravitate to its allure and addiction almost instantaneously. I was privy to trying it out in its beta stage and I can attest to the full-blown site being far better and much easier to use.

If you haven't tried it yet or have already joined, come join me in a small conversation...let's tweet it out @TheFeatureMag. See you there!!!
